Zlatibor – a mountain widely known for its hospitality, nature, and rich tourist offerings.

For decades, it has been a magnet for tourists not only from Serbia but from the entire region. Last year, 2023, was a record-breaking year for the tourism workers of this mountain, as Zlatibor recorded over one million overnight stays according to official statistics, clearly demonstrating the popularity of this destination. With such impressive results, Zlatibor has established itself as a tourism leader in this part of the Balkans and is now at a development crossroads.

“We have reached a point where we have achieved a notable level of tourism services, where we have achieved and maintained an exceptional quality of tourism offerings. Now we face the great challenge of maintaining that level and quality, using innovative methods and ideas, meeting the demands and needs of the modern tourist, and moving forward,” says Vladimir Živanović, Director of the Zlatibor Tourist Organization. He adds, “A destination that attracted one of the world’s largest hotel chains, ‘Karisma Hotels,’ to open their five-star hotel ‘Bor by Karisma’ in Zlatibor, has a clear task ahead. By introducing innovations and new content and attractions, we must adequately respond to the sophisticated demands of numerous tourists from around the world. This direction aligns with further plans for the development of ‘new Zlatibor.'”

Gold Gondola

The longest panoramic gondola in the world has set new standards for the development of Zlatibor tourism. The arrangement of King’s Square and the stage, pedestrian zone, reconstruction of the lake in the center, and the installation of a multimedia fountain have set the vision for the future of Zlatibor. “The first phase is done, and now the second phase is ahead of us. The construction of a new Zlatibor, a modern sports-recreational complex, golf course, and entertainment facilities demanded by tourists are the major projects we will focus on in the upcoming period,” Živanović states.

The project to build a new branch of the gondola that will connect the top of Tornik and Pribojska Banja has received state support. The public has been presented with the most modern and highly interesting technical solutions, launching Zlatibor into the orbit of ideas and innovations. The project to arrange the top of Tornik, now the end and soon the starting station of the gondola to Pribojska Banja, involves arranging four ambient units (a pavilion with tracks for cyclists and pedestrians, a bird museum, a modern hospitality center with indoor and outdoor pools, an amphitheater for performances, and an art park) with a 139-meter-high tower as the central feature, interpreted as a golden pine.

Gloden City

As part of the development of “new Zlatibor,” the “Golden City” project has been announced. Covering an area of 200 hectares along the shores of Lake Ribnica, the construction of a unique complex that will combine natural beauty and luxury is planned. Golf courses, a wellness and spa center, exclusive restaurants and shopping centers, recreational activities (cycling, walking, boating…) are part of the planned project. The project includes ecologically sustainable solutions to ensure minimal impact on the environment.

To conclude the story of numerous innovations and projects that the people of Zlatibor are diligently preparing, it is important to note that traditional values are the priceless treasure of Zlatibor. “The new projects we have carefully planned and developed are designed to follow the latest trends while respecting and preserving the rich tradition of Zlatibor. This is a promise that, despite modernization, we will firmly adhere to the values that form the heart of our tourist community,” concludes Živanović.
